| Wirral Advanced Motorcyclists - Tunnel Tour |
WAM and some guests had an afternoon out in January going underground for a Tour of the Mersey road Tunnel. Lasting a couple of hours, it proved to be very informative and educational in showing how the Mersey Tunnels operate from 'behind the scenes'. I managed to get some pictures on the day, but with the light levels being very low, they are a little grainy.

In the Control Room. All the grey panels are old English Electric controls from the 1950's. They use Computer control now, but is slower to operate. Progress, eh? ;o)

Everyone listens.....

This is one of the massive exhaust fans spinning up as members look on. It was mighty draughty!!
This is one of the massive intake fans spinning up as members look on. This area was a bit cleaner!!

Here everyone has a look under the main road deck, next to one of the under road refuges.

When looking up all the time, this is how Hard Hats are to be worn. I know, cos Chris said so.

Inside one of the refuges

Under the main Road Deck

Members make their way back to the surface, with the prospect of many flights of stairs to climb.....

WAM practice the 'Drop Off' System on the way back to the surface.....

back to top (very approprite!!)
And finally a group shot in the boiler room. Note the Art Deco ceiling and floor tiles
